Philips Stadion
Game changing transformation: Philips Stadion switches on to a brighter future for fans and guests with four new Urban LED walls
After more than a decade of service, the new LED walls in the Philips Stadion deliver a huge leap in image quality and brightness – perfectly aligned with our ambitions for innovation. Fans now experience sharper visuals, while installations continue to support dynamic and impactful content.
Background
Situated in the centre of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, the Philips Stadion is a modern, world class arena and the proud home of PSV (Philips Sport Vereniging) – one of the most successful football clubs in the country. With a capacity of around 35,000 seats, it offers state of the art amenities and an unforgettable atmosphere, making it an iconic venue for football, as well as an array of other major events. The stadium’s name reflects its deep connection to Philips. PSV itself was established in 1913 as a sports club for Philips employees, and the stadium has carried the company’s name since its early years. This longstanding bond between club, city, and company has shaped the stadium into a symbol of Eindhoven’s identity and industrial heritage.
Challenge
After more than 12 years of remarkable service, the existing P16 Philips LED walls within the Philips Stadion no longer met the expectations for modern display quality. Seeking to enhance the matchday and event experience for fans and visitors to the stadium, PSV Eindhoven approached PPDS to recommend solutions to upgrade the four walls – drawing upon its complete portfolio of Philips LED displays. The challenge was manifold – to install four new cutting edge and multi functional showcasing walls for sporting events and other activities hosted at the venue…in a window of just three weeks. The project needed to address the demand for high quality, reliable, and flexible AV solutions that could adapt to various event requirements and ensure clear, engaging displays throughout the stadium.
Solution
Bringing on board local AV and technical specialist – and PPDS Partner – Mansveld Techniek to carry out this very special installation, PPDS and the team at the Philips Stadion selected the Philips Urban LED 6000 Series with a 6.67 pixel pitch and 10,000 nits of brightness. An epic five times step up from the previous 16 pixel pitch and doubling the original 5,000 nits. Better still, while deliver superior image quality, increased reliability, and enhanced operational flexibility for both matchdays and a diverse range of events, each of the new 8m x 4.5m walls operate with a power consumption of 18kw. This brings immediate cost of ownership savings when compared to each of the original walls’ 23kw power consumption.
When Philips was established in 1891, it was with a vision to bring cost effective electrical innovations to the world. What better way to celebrate that vision than by bringing the latest outdoor Philips LED innovation back into the Philips Stadion – continuing to showcase high performance and innovation to the world.
